Breakfast - Outside the box


It has been said that those who eat breakfast are more likely to maintain a healthy weight or be able to shed pounds more quickly. One theory is that eating breakfasts kick starts your metabolism earlier in the day, allowing you to burn more calories overall.  In my opinion, it is more likely that skipping breakfast puts you in a position where you are ravenous by the time you eat making your choices less than nutritious.

In North America we primarily go for the really high carbohydrate choices, bagels, breads, danishes, donuts, cereal. While these carbohydrates play a role in replenishing the fuel our brains and muscles need to function, they can also send us on a blood sugar roller coaster, giving us a burst of energy followed by a crash. It is much better to have a breakfast that also includes quality protein and fat, two ingredients that will keep you satisfied and fueled throughout your morning.

In other countries around the world in is not uncommon to eat cheese, vegetables, soups and fish to start off your day.  While this may be a stretch for some, it is a good direction to start heading if you want to cut your morning sugar habit.  These types of breakfast foods allows you to have sustained energy and mental focus until its time for your next meal.

Cauliflower & Cheese Egg Bake

Leftovers are perfect for breakfast...
Quinoa topped with nuts, fruit and cinnamon
A Bowl of soup, stew or chili
Homemade Hot Chocolate: organic milk, cocoa, maple syrup and cinnamon
1/2 Avocado with hot sauce and a hard boiled egg.
Salmon with Cream cheese on whole grain bread.
